To celebrate International Women’s Day we took some time to sit down with local Melbourne artist Frances Cannon and chat about her work, her inspirations, her influences and her dog/cat preference.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR ART STYLE AND YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECTS TO ILLUSTRATE.
My art is about me! I use personal experience and emotions to fuel my illustrations and paintings. A lot of my work revolves around body image, mental health, and self-love. My style varies from simple black and white illustrations to large colourful paintings.
EVERYONE’S ARTISTIC STYLE EVOLVES OVER TIME. AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR PERSONAL EVOLUTION DID YOU SAY TO YOURSELF “SELF, LET’S MAKE ART FOR A LIVING.”?
I opened my online store casually while I was still studying at university. I worked hard all throughout uni to grow my online popularity and grow my business - so by the time I had finished university I was able to make a living from my artwork!
PIECES OF ART CAN BE INSPIRED BY SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. PEOPLE, NATURE, MUSIC, POLITICS, ECT. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOUR ART?
Most of my artwork is inspired by my body and my experiences, but I also take inspiration from politics and current events, and I draw everything through an intersectional feminist lens.
MARCH 8TH IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WHICH CELEBRATES THE ACHIEVEMENTS WOMEN THROUGHOUT HISTORY. WHO ARE SOME OF THE WOMEN THAT HAVE INFLUENCED YOU, NOT JUST AS AN ARTIST BUT ALSO AS A PERSON?
My close women friends are very important to me and influence me every day with their self-love, their passion for their work, and how they support other women! My mum is the most special person in my life. She has supported me through my whole life and even though our beliefs are very different, she continues to support my art and my dreams! I'm so grateful to be her daughter.
THE CAMPAIGN THEME FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY THIS YEAR IS #PRESSFORPROGRESS WHICH AIMS TO PROMOTE A “GENDER PARITY MINDSET”. HOW DO PLAN TO ACCELERATE GENDER PARITY IN 2018 AND BEYOND?
I always aim to use my platform to talk about the importance of feminism, social justice, and equality.
WHAT IS THE AIM OF YOUR WORK?
To connect with and uplift other women, and to express my emotions and document my experiences.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT PAINTING OR ILLUSTRATING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Watching The Office on the couch with my dog and eating Thai food.
