“Unyoked is for those looking for a bit of adventure in their trip away. People who are looking for something a little different, to get away from it all and get their Bear Grylls on.”
Twin brothers Cam and Chris Grant came up with the idea for Unyoked after returning home from one of their annual holidays. They noticed, upon returning to their office jobs, that the relaxing effect of their trip away seemed to disappear immediately. They were back to the grindstone, the next big adventure impossibly far away.
With the help of design and construction company Fresh Prince, Cam and Chris set about building two completely self-sustainable off-the-grid miniature homes in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
Since those original two (named Miguel and Heike) were built and nestled in the wilderness, the brothers have added another four cabins – another two in NSW and two in Victoria – and have plans to add plenty more around the country.
“Staying in one of our cabins isn’t an instead of your annual getaway; it’s an as well as.” Unyoked co-founder Cam Grant told us. “People are realising that sometimes you just need a night away to get off the grid and recharge. You need a ‘micro-adventure’”
We’re tracked and monitored. Managed and pushed. We rarely get a chance to scratch those primitive itches and just get away, fend for ourselves, explore the unknown and truly live. When you stay at an Unyoked cabin, that’s precisely what you’ll be doing.
These are beautifully finished, high-spec mini-homes, designed and built off-site and driven out to their new homes. They are paired back with the natural elements exposed, designed to make you feel part of the landscape. Clean and simple plywood construction and brass and copper fittings are meant to take the focus off the house and back on to the beautiful surroundings never more than 2-hours from the city.
“Those epic adventures are awesome. But we want Unyoked to be one of those things that (when you’re having a bad week) you can just book in, finish work, drive for an hour and feel like you’re a million miles away from anything.”
Unyoked also offers land owners an opportunity to monetise their unused land without having to build on it. Land owners approach Unyoked, the guys head out there to see if the setup suits and they go from there.
“There’s so much unused land around the country which is perfect for what we’re looking for.” Cam told us. “It’s great to be able to unlock these amazing spaces for people to enjoy and recharge in.”
There’s something romantic about a cabin in the woods. No streetlights or car horns keeping you up at night. No social media or online shopping to distract you. You’re away from the ho-hum of the everyday grind, fending for yourself and reconnecting with nature.
“You can really feel the benefits when you’re in these places. And that’s exactly what we set out to achieve. Too often we mistake making a living for having a life, Unyoked is meant to be an antidote to that.”
